Have you ever wondered about the history of Women's Day in South Africa?
In 1956, 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, to protest the amendment to the urban area’s act that the government had put into effect. This meant that women had to carry passbooks, which were special identification documents that decreased women of colour’s freedom even further. Every year on the 9th of August we commemorate the courage and strength of the women who risked imprisonment and beatings whilst standing up against this. Just like the suffragettes before them who stood up for what they believed in and laid the footprints in which these women, such as Helen Joseph, Lilian Ngoyi, and thousands of others followed.
